Eric, you are welcome. Fond memories are always welcome!
The Mint, and the oil companies, et al, have a lot in common. They don't have to spend an awful lot for their materials, and are making a huge profit from their products. IMHO. Not to speak of the products that are "offered" to the Coin collecting customers. I don't collect any of the dollar-sized coinage in particular. I do have several different sized "dollars", but they are "also-rans". I think some of the latest issues could be as well received as would be the "Pot Metal coins". They leave NO ROOM for pride.
You mention the sky-high prices for the different alloyed steel. That brings to mind, the way things were done in Fontana, CA, at Kaiser Steel. Can you imagine having the right to three month paid vacation, every five years? That was part of the contract!
The "bull gang" could only make certain repairs on support equipment, to keep the product moving. When it comes to a major repair, like having to repair the bearing on a vessel, (because on oiler failed to oil it), the millwrights were not allowed to do the work. It was "Farmed out" to the "Red-Hats". A Private , commercial Millwright crew. I didn't work there very long, before they shut down the Open-Hearth furnaces, and the BOP-1, (Basic Oxygen Process), where I was working., and eventually the whole thing was bought by a Japanese company, and taken to JApan! My conscience bothered me the whole time, because I was not allowed to do repairs, that could be, and should have been made. No, that is "Red- Hats" work! So named, because they all wore red safety hats. I brought my tools with me when I reported, and was told I had to take them home again.. I could go on , but I think you have the idea how they operated. Whikle there, I found out a lot about making different kinds of steel. Too bad the barganing unit was so damn GREEDY! It happens in all contract dealings, I guess, in all industry, otherwise, we would not have to import everything we will eat, wear, or use, in the future! Best I drop it here!
Sorry about getting carried away, but I get pretty mad about things that benefit so few, and affect so many!
Dick
