Not bad at all Gabe. Could stand to be just a bit sharper, but excellent anyway. You weren't playing with a Intel Play QX3 scope, were you? I have one of those, and it is awesome, especially being able to see the pic on the computer monitor before you snap the picture.
However, it wasn't good enough to take pics for the site, but I love that little toy anyway.
Also...what magnification were you using for the pic you took?

Yeah Bob, its the Qx3. I have been playing with it since mid-day today after I came back from Puerto Rico and for its price I think it is not bad at all.

I know that the pics arent good enough for the site, but are clear enough to let you see what I am seeing, and better than what I had before.... nothing. I used 60x for magnification, and its basically the only magnification I can use. There is also a 10x and a 200x, but those are too powerful or too weak.

What about this one? Is the picture better?

The coin is a 1969 Colombian copper coin (forgot denomination and too lazy to dig-up the coin) with a repunched 19 in the date. Pretty amazing variety.

Gabe, that 2nd picture is so much more in focus, and you did a great job with it. I love that little Qx3, and that's what got me started taking pics. The 60X magnification does wonders for close-ups, but the 200X is a little too much. I would have loved it even more if it had magnification ranges between the 10 and 60 and between 60-200. The lighting you are getting is very good too. That was a problem for me for a while. Anyway...great pics, nice coins, and welcome to the world of magnified coin photography. You done good!!

I said in the Lincoln Cent section/ 1951 D stream, that I check ed the Intel website and the Intel Play Qx3 is not supported anymore. All other digital microscopes are in the $500-1500 range. Does anyone know of another scope that is in the Intel Play range?

The last time I looked - about a week ago - Amazon still had Qx3s. They were something like $50. Is the status of Intel support important?

I finally found out that the Qx3 was taken over by "Digital Blue"

Thanks Bob, I did experiment with the microscope and would like to provide some information about it. It is a great buy for a first timer and for kids science projects. It installs easily and it is easy to take snapshots and export photos to a file. There is top lighting and bottom lighting that can be adjusted.

The only way to take photos of holdered coins is via the handheld method. The scope comes off the stand and you can place it directly on the holder. I did this with my 1880-CC dollars and got really nice photos of the 8/7 overdates that way. I also took a photo of a 1954 S 1MM-004 and got a nice photo of the RPM. Both photos at 60x. I have not spent much time with it so I have not determined if I can take a pic of the entire surface of a coin in hand held mode, because the scope was touching the surface of the holders when I took the 60x photos.

I have also not yet tried to take a photo of a raw coin on the platform of the microscope stand. The lighting seems to put more glare on copper than silver. I am hoping I can photograph some of the die markers on my 55 DDO and 72 DDO but if I cannot do it without holding the edge of the microscope on the surface of the holders, I may not get the light directed correctly. In general the photos are as you would expect, a little grainier as compared to a more professional set up as we see in the Coppercoins gallery and many dealer sites.

I am trying to get my photos on a website of some kind so that they will be accessible to everyone. So I will keep you up to date on the progress. Very Happy
