The edge of the memorial looks "shelf like" like strike doubling. On the T of united it looks like the doubling is into the primary vertical bar, making the "normal" vertical bar very thin. A doubled die wouldn't take out of the primary design, it would add to it so I think it's probably strike doubling.

I agree, it is machine, or "strike doubling, IMHO.
