Seems like I am running across more than my share of error coins while searching. I found this one in a circulated roll and thought that it was of interest due to the doubling.
There have been more than a few posts concerning machine doubling and what is and isn't in the past month or so and this sort of fits into those threads. As you can see, the doubling, which appears as very exaggerated machine doubling, is mostly on the obverse of this coin with doubling showing on the shoulder, bowtie and lower part of Lincoln's bust. The reverse shows doubling on the ONE (actually tripling can be seen on the O) and what you can see of . E . PLURIBUS . UNUM shows extreme extra thickness similar to a doubled die. There is also an extra "rim" that does show on the reverse.
I believe that this coin was doubled (triple) struck in collar, but my knowledge of this type error is limited. Does anyone have a better feel for what has happend?

Very interesting.
Im not sure if it is a multi struck coin, but the overall weakness of the design of the coin means that the coin would be a die trial strike. According to a couple of error coin books I have, and die trial can be seen on the coin when the coin shows even weakness in the obverse and reverse. I suppose that the coin could have been struck through grease in the obverse and reverse. I dont know if there is a way to tell both errors appart.
You definately have an error coin, but I'm not sure what type of error it really is. Hopefully someone in the board has a better idea...

I think Gabe is on to something with his comment. I don't know errors well enough to give a good educated guess. I would chime in here if I did. Only thing I can say is that it looks like a mint error, and it looks slightly double struck.

I have seen quite a few double struck in collar errors, and yours fits right in with what I have seen, but more pronounced. What Gabe said about about a trial strike could also address some of the mushyness and/or light strikes. My gut tells me it is a double struck in collar mint error. Just about all of the characteristics of the coin (including the fact that the doubling is primarily in the center of the die) leads me to believe that is the case with this coin.
