I was searching through some scratch and dent proof Lincolns when I noticed that on my 1973-S proofs (at least I think it was 73) the "EPU" lettering seemed to be very crisp and had serifs while others before and after that date had less distinct lettering w/ no serifs.

Is it my imagination or is that the way they were made?

Also, I noticed some machine doubling on some of the coins, esp on the obverse. How prevalent is that?

On the 1973-S Cents I'm not sure of. The ones I've more familiar with are the 1961-1964 ones. That are the ones I've seen more of. There are a few machine doubled/ejection doubled that I have seen in these years, but they are generally few from what I've seen. Nice doubling is a GREAT thing to find in proof Cents as there were fewer made with each die. So they are rarer. But the 73-S Sorry no information on them that I know of. But one thing I've learned on DD's, they happen and they are fun to find when you can get the proof cents. I like to buy rolls of them, but they are few and far between that haven't already been searched. I found a few nice ones a while back, but that was years ago. Hang on to your coin and post images if possible and let's see what you have.

Robert,
Not only on the proofs, but the reverse detail on all 1973 cents was significantly better than any other year around it. If you find a few of the business strike coins, have a look at the statue on the reverse. It is far more detailed There was a reverse die makeover for this year. Notice that the designers initials are huge this year as well. As far as machine doubling...you are correct. There does seem to be a substantial amount of this for 1973.
