I found this example of a 1983 P the other night and didn't find anything that matches it. I do not know if it rates as a DDO or not. You information is greatly appreciated.

From what I see I'd say it's machine doubling.
Looks flat and shelf like.
Check out the forum thier's lots of pictures of doubled dies and I'd be willing to bet more that a couple strings on how to tell the differance between them.

For some reason, the 1983P had a lot of machine doubling, most common on the reverse than the obverse. There are more than a few doubled dies in this year also, so it is advisable to check each 1983P carefully.
In this case, I believe that Mike is right; the doubling is shelf like and also, there is a lack of notching.
There are some very nice examples of the 1983P obverse doubled dies on site and they can serve as a great example of what to look for. I hope that you have luck in the future at finding one of these doubled dies, all it takes is to keep on searching.
