When I first saw the mint mark below I thought it was 1944D - 1OM-002 but after looking closer it looks like the upper part of the S is too high and it does not have the appearance of the S inside the D like the picture on this site.
Could it be an earlier or later die state? The pictures on this site are MDS. I also looked at Wiles RPM book and like the picture on this site the S appears to cross the middle of the D while mine looks a little higher. Could it be OMM #3?

To me, it doesn't look like an OMM at all. I did an overlay to ensure it wasn't OMM #002, and I have included it here. The mintmark position is off a bit. The part of the S that should have been inside the D mintmark is not on your coin, and it is a somewhat protected area from wear as well.
As to what it is, I don't know. Could be a die gouge of some sort, but at this point, it doesn't look like an RPM or OMM. Of course, I could be wrong because that mark on your coin looks very similar to the top portion of the OMM. Anyone else??

Bob, thanks for the overlay and your thoughts. I kind of reached the same conclusion but still have some hope that maybe it is something. The mark looks so much like the top of the partial S in OMM#2 that it seemed like a strong possibility it was an OMM.
