1946-S DDR

I found a couple of rolls of 1946-D at a local coin show. I found 19 different major and minor RPMs from them. One that caught my eye was one with a HUGE mintmark on it. I kept looking at the large mintmark then turned it over to find a nice DDR on it. Wondered if anyone else saw a mintmark this large before. If so check out the reverse to see if it is from the same die pair.

Coop, were you looking for the doubling in the "4", by chance? BJ wrote an article in the ERRORSCOPE covering this: '46-S, DDO, or RPD. I pulled out my '40's, and checked all the 46's, but found nothing.

Coop - That is one BIG san serif mintmark and I have seen similar, however, not quite as large. Seems like the 1946-S, Lincoln cent is very interesting year, with the inverted mintmark, the large amount of RPMs (I have 11 sitting on my desk that are not listed), the S over D and the weakness in the 4 and 6 of the date which has led to, or at least in my opinion, a repunching of the 4 digit on certain working dies.

To give you all an update on that inverted mintmark; to date, there is only one die that has been identified with it and to my knowledge, only five have been located (four by coppercoin members). It is now listed in CONECA files as 1946-S, IMM-001 and in John Wexler's files (NCADD) as WIMM-001. I do have a feeling that this die will be elusive, especially in the higher grades and it will be comparitive in price to the 1946-S/D (1946S-1OM-001). I also feel that there is a small possiblity that there may be other inverted mintmarks in the Lincoln cent series, especially in the 1940s

Something to watch for the next time I re-check these rolls. I was searching for the inverted one on the rolls of 46-S. But the 1945-S I couldn't figure out what they were doing that year. Seemed like both directions appeared often. Make it hard to remember which was the incorrect position. Maybe my eyes were acting funny that day. But if you have a roll of 45-S check them out and see if you find the same or similar thing. I probably need to go back to that roll again. Funny how you missing things going over them over and over. Seems like they are growing RPM/DD or maybe I just had to much beer the last time I checked them.
