According to www.coinflation.com and www.kitco.com zinc is up quite a bit bringing zinc pennies to a metal value of more than one cent. I am sure everyone already knows about the copper ones being worth $0.023 each. I keep all my pennies and I will continue to hoard them until I can no longer get pennies at face value. Also canadian cents and pre1981 canadian nickels are a great risk free investment if you can get them at face.
Before I started "liking" coins I was selling the 98% copper canadian cents to local scrap dealers for $2.40 a pound USD.
It was a pretty good deal because I was buying them for $0.50 a roll (3rolls=1 pound).
Has anybody been collecting pennies for their metal content?

Earwig- Its nice to know, some tool shops and the like are saving metals instead of just tossin them in the garbage. I don't know what type of tool shop you work in (tool & die?) but I know that carbide is worth alot; and is sought after by scrap yards.

I have never separated and kept the coins for metal content, but I'm getting close to considering it.

Not on purpose. I've got about 60 pounds between junk wheats and UNC 1981 cents, plus probably another 20-30 pounds of copper/bronze/brass world coins mixed up with another 20-30 pounds of non-copper/bronze/brass, all of which has been sitting around waiting to be sold some day.
Nothing compared to what Chuck used to have (still has?) in his closet!
