sconels4, I would say, damage, on the 1, and a combination of die deterioration, and maybe s bit of MD. Bob, or CD?

Seems to me like die damage occured here. The top of the 1 was probably scraped and settled off to the side of the primary digit and has just stayed and worn there all along.

It seems to be common on 41 and 42 for some reason.

I think it's like mechanical doubling but its more like mechanical damage. I don't know why but there are lots of 41 cents like that.

Now that I think about it, you are right in that these seem to be prevalent. It may be possible that the 1 was scraped during the ejection process. I also remember seeing this during the early 60's as well.
