I bought proof set today.. at a pawn shop for $1.00 Couldnt pass it up... It doesnt seem to have been open howeverthere are strange things on the coins look at the pictures. Saddest proof set I have ever seen. Every coin had something on it..... ( think I paid 9 cents more than its worn.. I guess that could be accounted for in the plastic holder!! ) At least I got a great deal on a TV for the kids to play video games on.... So I dont have to share the main TV in the house.

Looks like you have some strike throughs Cathy. Looks like they are from threads of some sort. You are correct that they are not the best looking coins...but for a buck, I think you did OK.

IMHO, I think the reddish thing on the half and the whitish thing on the quarter are tiny threads of some sort, not strike throughs. I've seen dust and threads from those velour-looking presentation boxes work their way into the coin holder. (Perhaps this set was stored in a red and white bag for several years?) I can't tell on the dime but that might be threads as well.
The cent has carbon spots... ouch!
Still, not bad for $1. I would have bought it too. You might even consider trying to break them out and (carefully) trying to dust them off?
If it doesn't work and you end up breaking them out and spending them you only lost what, 9 cents? To me it would be worth 9 cents to spend some rough looking proof coins! Somewhere, some time someone will notice the "S" on the half, quarter and dime. Wouldn't they be shocked!

Carbon spots.. who what when where why?
YOu know the top picture there.. the line looks like it has red ink pen in it and today I notice the same kind of thing on the nickle and its a BLUE like. its really goofy. I cracked it open to get a better look see and The quarter is a FS-25-1968S-101 (O27), least I think it is.
I dont know there is something strang with these oins. The penny edge is off and it is sharp like could cut myself with it but abe is all washed out no real details. The color is odd and Shiny and well all the coins are like that then they all have these stang scratches and such. When I cracked them out it was a tough time Hubby had to snap it. Oh well... Im to tired to think about it tonight.

Cathy, check it REAL close for S/S, or doubling all letters around the rim, or LIBERTY doubling. Any of these will get your money back, if it is PR63, or better.
