I was filing away some varieties this morning and I noticed that I have 4 of these. In the description on this site it says "This variety is listed as RPM#12 by CONECA, but this listing is incorrect. Often this variety shows only a couple of spikes protruding from the east and northeast parts of the primary mintmark, but later die state specimens have been found that show almost a complete S mintmark."

I had a couple of questions. Is CONECA reviewing their designation to change it or are they agreeing to disagree on this particular variety? If they did change their designation do you think that would cause the value to increase? I was thinking of selling a couple of my copies but did not want to repeat my previous experience of buy high, sell low.

I don't know for sure if CONECA changed the desigination on this die. But most recognize it as a over mintmark. A good image helps when selling them. Something to help fill in the blanks about what they are looking at.

CONECA still maintains it's RPM designator of RPM #012 for this variety. Why they choose not to change it to an OMM is beyond me. Seems like it's just being stubborn. I sent CONECA a picture of my LDS specimen over a year ago and inquired about their willingness to change the designator. That coin shows almost the entire outline of the S mintmark, but they still have not done anything about it.
This is one case where the combined opinions of all the other experts in the field has failed to sway their opinion. Let it be so. If you plan on selling some, I would direct potential buyers to the coppercoins site where they can make up their own mind. Ultimately, it is on Overmintmark, not a Repunched mintmark that you are selling...no matter what CONECA states in their listings.
If CONECA does change their designation, I don't think it would affect the prices at all. Many people who collect varieties know of the other attributers and sites, and should be able to make a smart and informed decision on its value.

Gentlemen, I have to put in my two cents worth here. If it is as CONECA says, what is their explanation for the very heavy abraision marks? If it IS an RPM, where is the primary mark? The indicator that you put, ( the scribed "S"), to me looks as if it might be in the correct place, but just a hair CCW, pivoting on the top of the "S". THe mark next to the "D" looks to be in the right position, and with the small twist CW, would fit very closely to what you believe. Look inside the MM. There are three small marks that may be of help.
