Does anyone have one of the 1927-P 1DO-001 aka FS-013.5 aka die-1?
It's a tough one to spot in circ late states... but I think this coin might be it.
It has a good reverse marker, a raised spike in the O of ONE on reverse. This coin has a nick on the O but it did not make the spike inside, it's raised like a die chip/crack. Can anyone tell me if that's a marker for this variety?
Bob I think I even see it on the listed one but can't tell from the rev picture, can you tell me if it's there if you have a higher res pic to look at?

Ed,
The raised spike you see on your coin is die damage. I do have that variety here (also in circulated condition) and there is no marker on the O of ONE. If you can shoot me a couple of pics of the obverse (LIBERTY, GOD, and the date) I can see if I can verify it for you. The coin that's on the site is not mine, but it's the best one I have seen so far.

Hi Bob,
Thanks for looking. The story on this one is it's in a SEGs holder and real hard to get a decent picture.
From looking myself I don't see anything on IN GOD but the T of LIBERTY and date sort of looks similar to the variety but I think it's wrongly attributed and not any variety. I'm just amazed at what they based their attribution on unless it was a marker and the die state and grade hide most of the doubling. In their discription they list IGWT eylid 27 LIB but I've never seen any book that says that variety has anything on the eyelid. My guess is wrong attribution. Any thoughts?

Ed,
Sorry to say this, but there is no way that coin is DDO-001. Even in a well circulated example, you should see at least a thicker base to all the letters in LIBERTY. IGWT would be thicker also. The upper curve of the 2 and the upper bar of the 7 should be thicker also. I checked all reference material I have as well, and there is no mention of a pick-up-point (PUP) on or near the eyelid. Here are a few pics of my coin that grades maybe a bit higher than yours. You can see what I mean about it being pretty obvious that the coin in the holder is not DDO-001.

Thanks Bob,
That was what I thought.
I have almost never seen ANACs PCGS NGC put wrong attributions on non variety coins but I have seen many from SEGs and PCI, it seems they make more mistakes than correct attributions. And that's ignoring their lofty grading standards and not noticing cleaning and recoloring. I guess thats why auction companies only use the top 3.
Thanks again for looking.

Off hand I say that they might have got this one wrong.
As far as the eyelid goes, they are correct; it is doubled to the north. There is clear doubling on IGWT, but I dont see anything on LIBERTY. The biggest give away on this die is the 2 and 7 of the date and the extra thickness in those digits.
Hope that this helps.

Wow BJ I can see it clearly on yours on IGT.
Strange that on Bobs and the one in the CPG and Wexlers book it shows fairly strong along the bottom of LIBERTY.
Makes me wonder if there could be more than one similar type.
It's tough on these older ones since nobody has a real gem to get pics of or good markers to go by.
I think mine is neither.

Here are a couple of more pictures that I took. The example that I have does show extra thickness on the LIBE of LIBERTY. You can see the extra eyelid just above the main eyelid.
