There's a lot of OBW circ wheat rolls for sale in crimped bank rolls. They say things like "09-58" "unsearced S mint only" "unsearched mixed" "from bank audits" "from hoards".

For those to be the real deal they would need to be rolled in 1958 and stored and the rolls would be old not new paper rolls. Nobody seperated them into mints or year ranges at banks so they must have been searched. The only likely good things in them might be some old common stuff or varieties that were missed depending on how well they were searched. You never know for sure but don't be misled by the crimped rolls.

The same is true with unc BU OBW rolls, you never know if the rolls were searched and re-rolled. Sometimes OBW rolls from years with nice varieties get premium prices.

Many stores and banks have machines that crimp the rolls, you can buy the rolls pre crimped on one end. Places will load them and crimp the other end for a small fee.

You can buy the roll crimping tool machine or twist it yourself one for cheap:

I guess if you liked OBW rolls you would need to see the color difference between the original ones and the ones they are selling today. If you note, the New Crimped rolls are a light shade of red/pink than the ones the back have for the current coinage that are red/rose colored.

Funny, I was just emailing Gary Cox about this same subject this morning.... Shocked Shocked Shocked

It seems that many people are easily misled. In a recent listing on eBay, I saw a BU roll of 1972 cents in a modern wrapper that was being claimed as an OBW roll. At the time I saw the listing, it had been bid up to $30 for what is most certainly a searched roll of coins.

I got burned on a roll of pennies, like they said, "unsorted, un searched, never been looked trhu, etc, and all there were was culls! Two places I DON"T buy rolls from: ebay, and the MINT! I got two "P", and two "D" rolls of nickels, along with 100 in a bag of 2005 quarters. When I opened the bag and saw the junk that was there, I almost sh, shipped them back! The coins were dirty, filthy, like there had been liquids spilled on them. Looked like they were "sweepings" from the floor. I opened the rolls, and the same thing. NO MORE LOOSE COINS, or ROLLS from the mint! I guess all "newbies" learn the same, (hard), way!
I get penny rolls wrappers from the bank, and of late, they are very brittle. Some crack at the fold when I try to use them.
Maybe I should use a "condom" like everyone else.
Once you get the knack of refilling them, they aren't too bad!
I save all that come in the boxes, Because I don't know where I could get them, otherwise.
