Does anyone know the correct distance or location of the D in the Large Date. I have several that are .015 from the curve of the 9 and more than I can count that are aprox. .030 from the curve. I'm using dial caliper's to measure. Was there different location's in the 1960 D series?

Rhubarb: Each die was hand punched with the mintmark. Each die made several hundred thousands. There are probably over 200 RPMs listed by different attributers for just that one year alone. So distance is vary variable because it is done by hand.

What coop said holds true for all dates and mints of Lincoln cents through 1989. In 1990 the mintmark was placed directly in the master die, which ended the variable placement per die.

It is very common to find widely varying mintmark placement on all earlier Lincoln cents. As long as the mintmark made it into the die between the date, rim, and vest, it passed and was used.

It was a question assumed to be covered, but with your post it is brought out in the light. Probably more that read this will appreciate it.

Coop, and David, you have to consider, he is still a "newbie", and still uses a Dial-Caliper to measure what we all just hold out at arms length, and "guestimate"! Just pulling your leg, David!

Yep, DAvid, I know what you are sayinh. I am not a Machinist, per se, but when the lathes, mills, or boring machines go down, they used to call me to fix them, back in the "good old days"! Bring back memories!
