Nor am I an expert, but I cheated, and put a magnifier on your photos, and I get the impression that you have a little bit of BOTH! Maybe S/S/inverted S!

Looks like 1971S-1MM-002? Check markers for that one to see if there is a match. The seperation & Location looks correct from what I can see.

Dick,
I took three different pics, right side up, up side down and sideways, sorry for the confusion. Rolling Eyes

That's the reason I have the impression that they might have punched it upside down, ans tried to correct it There is a part of the center curvature that just doen't look right. Maybe it's just me!

Mike: The missing die crack on the head is no biggie as the coin you have may have been struck before the die crack happened. But if you matched up the other die scratches then it should be that die. Again markers are only a sign of die state. Did you do an overlay to make sure it is the same location or eye check it? It appeared close to me.

One thing about looking for die scratch markers. The ones that go across letters/numbers and leave the tell tail marks on one or both side, the nice things is that these remain on the die a long time. The rest of the scratches in the field may flatten or wear away while striking other planchets, but the ones in these close areas remain a lot longer. Also other die scratches may made on top of the others, so you might have to look harder to see the flattened/worn away die scratches. these die scratches serve as fingerprints to identify the scratches on a certain die. The new looking the die scratches, the first coins show it sharper. The flatter, the later a coin was made. So scratches are valuable as well as other markers, but remember that not all markers will exist on coins struck before a certain marker was formed. Hope this helps.
