I have a long story about how I purchased an 1882-O dollar in the Other Coins section. The coin had some light green PVC residue that I managed to wipe off with tissue. The dealer suggested I dip the coin in alcohol or acetone to remove the green substance. Is that a good idea? Is there a better way?
By the way, the owner, Matt Lewis, told me that earlier in the day he accidentally poured some Coke into a cup that had some acetone in it and he swallowed it. Interesting.

Acetone will not hurt the coin and will remove the residue. You can either dip it (less effective) or liberally soak a q-tip in it and lightly brush off the stuff, which contrary to popular belief, if done carefully will also absolutely not hurt the coin. Just don't bear down and scrub the coin with the q-tip...a little common sense goes a long way with this.
I would not use alcohol because it will do little or no good for the coin - it will not dissolve oils. _________________ C. D. Daughtrey
