Here's something you don't see every day. I got a roll of 2006P cents and quite a few had large die cracks on the back of the head. However, one of them in the roll (same die) had this monstrous die blob. Seems like within the roll, I got two distinct die stages, but not the one that should have been in between the two. Pretty cool huh?

I would say 500,000 coin's before the die broke. Don't know for sure.

Looks like poor Lincoln had open brain surgery and they couldn't close the wound. Shocked

I have another two rolls from the same batch. I will see what kind of progression dies I can find of this one. I know that I have at least 2, maybe 3 of this progression. In addition, it is a minor doubled die obverse with an extra thick TY of LIBERTY. I saw this one last year and may have kept some of those coins too. I'll just hold onto them as a conversation piece. If I find more of this particular one, I will offer them up for folks who want one.

Bob, You can put me down for one of those, HUGE die cracks. You have seen some of my "pets".

Well,
I finished going through the 2 rolls, and was actually amazed at the range of die states for the subject coin. Out of those two rolls, I found 5 verifiable die stages, and here they are:

Bob, if you have enough for a third set, I'd be interested, as well. I'm assuming younwant to keep one set for yourself.

Bob,

Can you explain Die Stages? I'm assuming your talking about EDS, MDS LDS....etc..... Is this Correct?

Then they change Die's. I'm trying to read between the line's without a definate explanation.

David,
Die stages can best be explained as the period between strikings using the same die, that something verifiable happens to the coin struck. This is different than die state which is normally early, middle and late. The coins I pictured would be a great example of die stages. The first one shows just a die crack. The more coins that are struck, the worse the crack gets until eventually, the die breaks or is retired. If you can identify this specific die by markers, there are earlier die stages, and maybe later ones.

I have a die progression series of a BIE cent that includes 11 different stages.

For those of you who wanted some of these dies, I apologize, but all have been given away already except for the one set I have. If I find any more, I will let you know.
