Hi,
I have been reading this forum and visiting this site for a couple of months now trying to see what to look for. This site has been very helpful and after thinking I was rich for finding a handful of 1968 S and 1970 S double dies, I learnedthat they were all machine doubled. My first real find happened last week and is a 1968D-1DR-001. This got me very excited. The coin is not in great condition but the doubling on the FG can be seen. A couple of days after that I found a 1985D RPM-001 in change. This morning I found a 1990D with what looks like notches on the reverse. I didn't see any doubled dies listed so I tried to take a couple of pictures through my 30 year old microscope. They sure don't look like the other pictures on this site. I would appreciate any help in determining if this is a double die or machine doubling.

Aloha, Nohea! Welcome to the forum! I looked at your photo from your "30 year old microscope", and will say, that is the clearest notch on that "R", that I have ever seen! I don't think you have to worry about an MD! Nice find!

Welcome Nohea. Looks interesting. Do all the letters in that area have notching on the same side? When we find notching on one letter I don't get too excited. Why? Because a bag mark can hit the one letter and leave a mark like this. When you see it on two or more letters, then I jump for joy. But yours looks promising. If you found it in a BU roll, then there should be others (sometimes, I have found only one in a roll before) there. So you might want to take a second look. If you found it in circulated coins, it is hard to find a duplicate, but keep looking in your area if the coin looks fresh. But I guess the question is: Is the notching on the same side of the letters on two more letters? I see two in your image. But if there are more letters affected, I two will jump for joy with you. Looks like a great find. Welcome again, and remember to share what you find here on the site as it inspires all to keep looking and share in your joy.

Welcome nohea

I too lurked for a while pondering what I wanted to do with my coin's. When I made the decision to look thru them, I know I made the right choice. I think you did too. I have learned alot from the Member's here and I have a long way to go.

As Dick Pointed out, your microscope does very well.
The Notches for me are still to be learned.

Welcome to the Forum

Thank you for your replies. This coin came from a stash of cents that I saved in the 80's to early 90's. I ended up filling two big bottles with about $70. Here in Hawaii we usually have S and D mint marks and rarely see any P coins. The notching exists on most of the letters but can be seen only when viewed from certain angles. The microscope I have is a 50-750X toy scope, so I'll see if I can get some better pictures.

nohea, I take it from ths description of your cope, that it also has, (had?) a camera, as well. Those make it nice. When one has to do a juggling act to get the photos, it doesn't always come out too well LOL.
You are right, it does definitely have a lot to do with which angle it is viewed from.

I took the pictures by shooting through the eyepiece with a digital camera. I wasn't able to get any decent pictures of a larger area of the coin but have one of the designers initials.

From what I can see it looks like it could be an earlier die state than what is on the site. Hope Bob Check out your coin images and see what he thinks.

If this is a 1990D cent, it is the first one I have seen that looks like an obvious doubled die. If there is notching on more letters, I would bet that it is a legitimate variety. Of course...as always...I would have to see it in hand before I can verify it one way or another. This looks very promising to me also.

The coin is a 1990 D cent. I would like to send this coin in for attribution, but have never sent coins in the mail before. Do you have any recommendations as to packaging and if registered mail should be used?

I would not recommend registered mail for this coin although the choice is yours. Single coins normally do well in an envelope and a 39 cent stamp as long as the coin is protected by a flip and inside a folded piece of paper.
Attribution guidelines are explained in this link:

However, I recommend you email me first at bobp@coppercoins.com, or mustbebob1@earthlink.net so that we can set things up properly.

Aloha nohea - Welcome to the site and may you enjoy it to its fullest.

May I ask what part of this fine state that you are from? My wife and I enjoyed your hospitality for 28 years before moving back to the mainland. We lived on Oahu, the top of Kaahumanu St., in between Pearl City on Aiea.

Thank you for the warm welcome. I really enjoy this site and all of the information that is available, including the knowledge of the posters in this forum.

I was born and raised in Nu'uanu, O'ahu and currently live in Mililani Mauka in central O'ahu. I'm glad that you had a pleasant experience during your stay here. When did you leave to move back to the mainland?
