Just ran across this one while going through a box of Lincoln's. Its proximity and shape so near to the earlobe make it a possible canidate for a doubled die. There also appears to be some extra thickness in the beard area.
This is on a 2002 Philadelphia minted cent.

Gary - I did think of that possibility, that it was a gas bubble or even a die gouge, that is why I used the word possible., However, having said that, I am fairly well convienced that is it a doubled earlobe. The extra part just does not have the characteristics of a gouge or gas bubble, or in fact a damaged die effect.
If we were to look at all the Class VIII (plus a few Class VI) doubled dies that are being created by the single squeeze process, this die falls well within the parameters, even though there is a larger than usual offset between the primary to secondary images.
Okay Dick - where did you see this one? As far as I know, this is the first found that has this doubled die for 2002. CONECA, Coppercoins and NCADD do not have this listed in their respective files.
Now for a little "ANN LANDERS". Guys, they are out there waiting to be found. Murphy has proven that point beyond a doubt. All it takes is a little bit of dedication and knowing what to look for. This site provides you with what you need to know and I am sure with your dedication, one day, you will find something note worthy.

BJ, you ask the enevitable question: where?
In my case, I can't say where, OR when. I don't know if it is in the CPG, or where, but The only thing that might have happened, is that I saw it, but not on the coin shown. I have a photographic memory, and it gets me in trouble, occasionally. You tell me your name, and I'll forget it, before the conversation is finished, but show me something I can SEE, and it is "recorded"! I remind you of the "pre-imbarcation" Personnel inspection where I was called out to report with "bag, and baggage" to Personnel office. I got sealed orders, and told to take 30 days leave. Then carry out the orders. That was an example when it got me into trouble! A case of "wrong place, at the wrong time, and saw too much"! BTW, there is another, very similar, but just a hair larger, and slightly NW of where this one is. I don't recall what year.
BJ, How do you take the photos of the Wavy Steps? I have to de-focus, to be able to see them, and when I focus for clarity, they're gone!

Dick - I think you may be refering to 2006P-1DO-018, which is pictured below.
There is some similarity to the two, however, the 018 die is stronger.
As to trying to capture "wavy steps", or in fact "trails", as a picture is one of the harder things to do. Not only is the light critical, but also the angle must be just right. It gets alomost impossible to try and capture two sets of "trails" which are both in different directions. My best advice is to shoot "wavy steps" upside down; they seem to come out better that way. To be honest with you, I have shot thousands of pictures of wavy steps and still at times have dificulty in capturing what I want. Practice though does help, LOL.

BJ, your're right! That is the one I saw.
Now for the trails, and wavy steps photography, I am in the process of making a base, with a core that allows the upper section to "tilt" in any direction, and at the same time retain the same focus, during the rotation of the lower section. Sounds simple, but I'm still scratching my head, on just how to go about it! The rotation of the lower part will give all of the angles, while still keeping the same "face" toward the camera. It is like holding the coin in the fingers, shifting the angle, and being able to rotate the coin, at the same time, AND, keeping the focus intact, with one hand! All that, and then shift the scope around to the camera position, and then making the shot. I cheat, because I use a TV screen to help with the composition of the photo. Sometimes it works, but most of the time, it DON'T! All this, and the inability to pinpoint the sharp focus, when I can't pinpoint my vision. Oh well, no one is prefek!

Guess what Gary, you were right, it was a gas bubble. The only such bubble on the obverse or reverse of this coin.
Well any way, live and learn and search some more, LOL.

BJ,
I looked over a few rolls of 02-p, out of them I found 2 with similar bumps. One was like yours in location but had no tail on the bump but it's a bubble, the second had an almost identical bubble and a line of bubbles below it. Neither had bubbles in other areas. So I guess it just goes to show bubbles can trick us.

Actually this one had me fooled. It was Bob P. who discovered that it was a gas bubble.
As far as being bumb out about it, never. My luck has been fantastic in finding variety coins and I will never complain.
And the search goes on - - - - -
