Is this the 1956 D and S, in your opinion? This is a photo with arrows added by me to indicate the apparent horizontals of the S. The S is parallel to the D.

This is not one of the ones from the 'known' die, but that doesn't mean you necessarily haven't discovered something new. I don't see it well, but there could be something there.

Bob and Robert: Can you look at the "1956 D and S" and tell me if you think there is a shadow of an S there? I realize it is not the correct variety and I am planning on returning it.

Garry,
I definitely see the 'S' there....As a matter of fact, I can just about make out the entire S. Since I have never had the priviledge of seeing one of those in person, I can not say for sure whether it is the correct variety or not, but if it isn't, then it's a wonderful example of a misplaced mintmark.
Either way, I definitely see the entire S with the picture you posted.
