Man, do I ever LOVE this new camera!!

From my Nikon D-80, this shot is at less than half its original resolution. I think I have all the lighting and color issues defeated. My son and close sidekick says these colors are right on the money to look exactly like the coin. Oh, by the way, it's just a toss-back AU 1956D cent...nothing special about it.

Extremely nice. A real work of art. There's just something about great coin photography that gets the heart beating.
If I had that camera and worked the bugs out, I probably wouldn't sleep for a week. I'd be clicking away........

It's actually four light sources. Two desk lamps and two light guide ends. The light guide ends are in close for fine tuning the highlights, and the desk lamps are providing the general majority of the lighting.

The April 2007 issue of the Numismatist has an article entitled "Adventures in Digital Photography" by ANA member David Miklitsch – page 57.

David does three session tests to 1.) Determine which is better for photographing coins - film or digital cameras. 2) Best setup. 3) Best background and lighting. For equipment david used a Minolta single-lens refelex camera with a Minolta 50mm 1:17 lens. The digital camera was a Nikon COOLPIX 4600.

No surprise the digital camera was the winner even though he found focusing a challenge with the digital camera, but the ease of framing and the ability to take hundreds of shots more than compensated for the minor drawback.

For background, David found that the most accurate colors were rendered with backgrounds of light gray for copper and 18% gray for other coins. He also found that putting the coins on a golf tee gave the best results.

Best Setup: This was the final setup that he used and produced the best results. Natural, filtered, indirect sunlight from a large picture window, with a reflector and the coin on a golf tee with the 18% Gray Metering card for the background.

Thanks for the kind words. I learned from the best. Listen to his methods, and added a few myself. It's always best to be open minded. Keep what works and forget what doesn't. Chuck led me by the hand even though we have never met face to face. So he deserves credit also. TYVM
