Here is the deal on this new show at the Sand Expo in Las Vegas 27-29, 2007..... being a new show, the number of dealers and the attendance was on the low side. But, for guys like us that's great - less competition and the dealers are happy just to have someone to talk to, and look through their stock.
Getting there the first day was a bit of a challenge because the parking around the Sands Expo is long gone with all the continual building by the Venetian Hotel. So, after several drive byes and drive a rounds, I determined I had to park in the Venetian Hotel parking ramp and then trek a long way through the Venetian Hotel and follow the signs to the Sands Expo. I was ready to "sit down" by the time I arrived at the show's doors. Getting there on Sunday the next day was easier because I knew the route.
One dealer let me cherrypick through his large tub of dateless Buffalo Nickels at 4 for a dollar.... I ended up buying 93 of them and could have bought more but I didn't have the time. All those that I purchased either had a readable date, mintmark or both. I remember there was one 1924-D Buffalo in the group.
The big find was an older dealer (80 something) who was selling his personal error collection, and this was the first show that he brought it to. It wasn't a specatular collection, but I was able to buy all the better ones. Here is a list of coins I purchased. I may post a few images later because errors are not my area of study, and I may need some input. I paid mostly $2 each, and for a few others I paid a little more.

I was also able to pick-off two very rare Buffalo Nickel die varieties. Both in lower grade... but both are very hard to find in any grade.
1915 5c DDO-1 FS-14.9 VG-8.... nice for the grade.
1915-D/D 5c RPM FS-15 AG-2 has old acid treatment on most of the Obv.
It was 10-years ago that I found a similar 1915 DDO-1
That was 132 coins...plus 2 PCGS SAC$1 and another 11 other raw Buffalos (145 coins total, plus a 2008 Redbook). Not a bad haul for the weekend.

I forgot an honorable mention of 6 other coins I purchased from the older gentleman dealer. All 6 were Jefferson Nickels.
Two of them were counterfeit. In the Redbook I have always read under the Wartime Silver Alloy nickels (1942-1945) that "1944 nickels without mintmarks are counterfeit". That is exactly what these Jefferson Nickels are - 1944 counterfeits with missing large mintmarks above the Monticello Dome. Very cool.
The other 4-coins all came from the same 1960-D dies. On the obverse there is extra metal above some of the letters on LIBERTY, but the really neat thing about these coins is they all have the same dot on Jefferson's shoulder. My hunch is, this is the result of a Rockwell Hardness test on the obverse die and maybe they didn't plan on using the die - but then inadvertently used it.
We discussed the Rockwell hardness test in a pervious post. I will try and post an image of this Jefferson Nickel Dot die variety to further discussion of the Rockwell Hardness test and dots seen occasionally on coins.
