It is amazing that there are so many coins with the huge die break in this same area Dick. I don't quite understand why, but this is one of the more severe ones I have seen.

I have come across 2 2007Ps that had multiple severe die breaks starting from across the rim moving downwards toward the center. The way the coin looked it was amazing it didn't fall apart. I'm almost sure the die did though. I was almost tempted to post a couple of pics. I would like to find the one you did Dick. I think those are kind of cool.

Could be because of the clash in the 3rd bay and the letter Y in Liberty in the second bay. With that happen a few times on the same area, the die tends to crack deeper and the die crack get larger each time it happens. Kind of the pot hole affect. The more it cracks the more wear in that area as that is like a pot hole on the die making the break/chip getting bigger. The regular patterned is tempered, but it seem the deeper into the die, the less tensil strength that area is. Eroding faster making the pot hole deeper, the raise area larger on the folling coins struck. Eventually they notice this and replace the die. To us it looks big, but we are looking through a microscope. They probably just eyeball the pattern while running the maching to check for quality. To then it is just what happens to the die until it is bad enough to pull the die.

I have seen a lot of different size and types of cracks and chips, etc but never a big chip like this one. I was careful when I "flipped" it, to make sure it doesn't get jarred loose, and lost.
I got 16 rolls from Eric, and of them six were "D", and didn't have many bag marks, much less anything of interest! There are two rolls of "shot-gun shell ", "P" rolls, yet to be opened, and one '60D, that I am checking now. There are, so far, 18 clashed dies, 33 spiked heads, and 14 bars, col. 7, and 1 bar col. 6. I don't know how many more "col. 6" bars are there, because I wasn't checkng that side! I am doing that, now. That chip is visible to the "naked" eye, BTW.
Rock, I hope you DO find one! Go ahead and post them. In fact, when I get my "new camera", I will post a few of these that have been so prevelant in so FEW rolls! I say this, because the numbers above are from LESS THAN 8 ROLLS!
I know what you mean, Bob, I have never seen one like that, before, (other than in pictures, and even then, not many.

Here's someone selling a similar one.
I think it's not the same die because it's blob goes up more into the building but not as far below so it can't be progression (since if the bottom grew the top of it won't vanish).
It's interesting that these show up in that same area on the same year. Wink

ED, I have several others with activity in the same area, but not the same as this one. This appears to be a piece that got "dropped", possibly. I'm not sure what it is, but it is well protected at this time. Once I find the other ones that I refer to, I'll post a series of photos
