Can anyone explain what is referred to by the above description? My son found one recently, in a bezel, and he thinks AU-50. Maybe better. He sent it to ANACS for grading, etc. When checking the "values" for this date/mint, there is a notation, "bar-tail". What is the reference to?
Thanks for you input. Now that I recall, Cathy? You do VAMs frequently, maybe you can answer. Maybe this is NOT a VAM.

Dick,

It sounds like 1890-cc VAM-4
It has a big gouge tail bar from just past the feathers, look at the good pic they have here. It's a top 100 VAM worth big bucks! Maybe he found a good one Very Happy

Hope this helps Smile

ED, He will be very surprised if it turns out to be that one! Like I said, he has already sent it to ANACS, and hopefully it will come back as "the" one! I am going to send him the link, so he can check it out. Thanks very much for the info. Now I can go see what it is all about, now having the data.
I tried to get some info from VAMS, but nothing but a "What???" from some "Rockstar-girl". I don't think I'll be doing business with her. I don't have enough Morgans to have any VAM's, so that lets that one go back to where she came from.
Dick
PS I got another email/reply from the same "person". She asked "Is that a coin"? I signed out, abd may resign from the site! I don't like "on-line games" for the same reason that I will withdraw from this site: I don't like "sob-stories, and flat out propositions"! I would never go to a common chat room! I saw what they were like, many years ago, before I came to CA, and didn't like ANYTHING about them!

That image from Wikipedia is a reverse image. The tailbar is actually raised metal, caused by a large gouge to the die. I hope what you have is the real thing. It would be remarkable, in this day and age, to find one of those in a bezel. More often than not, the coin will come back as damaged, maybe cleaned, since it was used in jewelry, but it is still a great find and worthy of keeping as an example of a very scarce coin. If you search "tailbar" on ebay, in " US Coins/ Dollars" you may come up with a better photo. But here is an AU-50
