Gary,
A lot of us are unconvinced that there is actually a 7 under the 8. Some people believe that it is merely die scratches and/or gouges. We at coppercoins attribute the markings as master die doubling. The more you go through 1958 cents, the more of these you will find. They are actually pretty common.
Your scanner photo is rather small to actually see what you have there, but I do understand the limitations of the equipment

I need to correct myself on one thing Gary. The Master Die Doubling on the 8 of the date is on the upper loop of the 8. The anomaly above the 8 that people assume is the top of the 7 is actually a die gouge. according to most experts. AS far as its collectability, that (of course) is entirely up to you.

Alan Herbert authenticated that coin as a first for CONE over 20 years ago. While i was out sick for 10 years Del Romines apparently proved that the apparent 7 was caused by a lathe at the mint. I am still not convinced that Del is correct but that is what most belive today and my potential DDO was reduced to dust.~lucky2

My reason for believe this is a die gouge caused by the lathe is rather simple...it is not only parallel with the rim as would be the case with a lathe scratch, but an overlay with a 7 also doesn't match up. Furthermore, even if it were a 7, it is far too common to be considered valuable. I have seen a number of these things sell for pretty good money, and I have roll after roll of them. Not to debunk what people thought about it years ago, heck...they didn't have computers and photoshop back then. I can see how anyone could have mistaken it for a 7.

I recall reading somewhere that the wishful thinking that this was a 1958/ 7 cent was fueled by the fact that it was the 100th anniversary of the 1858/ 7 Flying Eagle. Can anyone post a picture of one of these? I haven't seen one. The photobucket link does not work anymore.

I couldn't get the PB link to work, either, GAry. I had a lot of trouble even logging in, until I emailed them, and explained my problem. That got me in to my album, bit not yours, maybe I don't have the password!!! LOL
