I wondered when someone would ask that question. You find that from a damaged punch on serveral different dies from that year. Seems like a good number of them have that same mark. But nice question. It was one I asked Chuck about a long time ago.
Check out page # 248 in his book on the last paragraph.

Horse-feathers! I have one on the scope, that look a lot like yours, Sandra, but at the same time, there is a difference. The lower serif is there. After reading Coops post, and checking the book, I am still in doubt. I'll have to check the site to see if there is something similar. I checked two before this particular one, and they don't have the serif. Thought I had finally found a good one..... Maybe in '08!
