Hi, I'm new to the forum...have been collecting for a while and very interested in lincoln cent varieties. I was wondering if this 1958-D is a common variety?
Thanks
Ron

Welcome Ron!
Good photo.
It's mechanical doubling so it's not a doubled die variety but it's a good example of MD.

Thanks Ed!
I appreciate the information, not sure though that I can tell the difference between MD and DD...any suggestions what to look for?

On this one if you look at the top of the 9 and 8 some of the original thickness was reduced by the second hit.
MD is on top of the normal letters so it reduces the original thickness as it makes the second shelflike image.
On doubled dies the images may overlap but it never takes metal away from the first image.
Another clue is on cents from years like this one the mintmarks were hand punched after the die was made. So if you see doubling in the same direction on the mint mark and the rest of the design that's probably from MD.

The date does suffer from mechanical doubling, however, this may be an RPM. It does look like notching/separation line on the bottom of the mintmark. Is this true?

Yes...there is separation at the bottom of the mintmark.

It does appear that the D is has a split to the South West. It is minor separation. I do see it.
