Washington Quarter Question...I have a number of 1956-1964 Type B or Variety II Reverse quarters. This type or variety was the proof reverse that was used on some circulation quarters in place of the type A reverse normally used during those years. I was under the impression that in 1964 the reverse was changed to a Type C Reverse to be used on all clad quarters, proof and circulation. I just found a 1968 proof quarter with a Type B or Variety II reverse. Can anyone give me an idea of the use of the Type B Reverse after 1964. Thanks in advance...Bob

I should be a lot more familiar with these than I am, but the type C went into usage way back in the early '50's. This was used on the bulk of the coinage in the years immediately prior to 1965. The '65 reverse was a modified type "c" rather than a new type. The type "b" still appeared once in a while through about 1972. After this there are some mules with one years type "c" reverse used for some coins of the following year such as the 1974 reverse of '73. In 1977 a new type "d" began appearing on a few of the quarters each year until 1985 when this type "d" was modified and used for all quarters.

The information I have is from a book by Q.David Bowers, A GUIDE BOOK OF WASHINGTON AND STATE QUARTERS. That's where I got the dates I used in the original post. He says the Type C or Variety III was introduced in 1964 probably made in anticipation of the clad coinage that commenced in 1965, but it is known on some of silver 1964-D coins. The Type B or Variety II was introduced in 1937 and was used on Proofs of 1937 to 1964 and on some circulation strikes from 1959 to 1964. The Type C reverse was used on all circulation coins beginning in 1965 And I thought it was used on proof coins also beginning in 1968. When I found the Type B reverse on the 1968 Proof and I couldn't find any reference to it's use during that year is when I started to wonder about it's use after 1964.

I've got all the most authoritative stuff written on the subject I think. I'll have to go over it and see if I can make heads or tails of it.
