This nice 64 D silver quarter has a ridge running almost the full length of 1 wing ending in a crack. Is this something ever seen before?

Actually, it is very common for quarter dies to crack in that area. The ridge you see is probably part of the die crack. I have seen this in just about every year the quarters have had that reverse die.
