The 1st 2 scans are of the same coin.My question is there are no letters visible on the reverse and the obverse is way to the edge.Is this double struck and a brocage on the reverse?

This next coin has elements on both sides.Just off center struck out of the collar?

Thank you all in advance for all your replies.Ken

Ken, Your coins are all off-center strikes. The lack of any detail on the reverse of the first coin could be because there was something else between the bottom of the planchet and the anvil die when it was struck off center...maybe another planchet?? This would not be a double struck coin.

The first cent is an off-center, uniface strike. It was struck against an underlying planchet. The second and third cents are simple off-center strikes.

Ken the '66 is an off-center strike, and as such, it will be a slight bit larger, and at the same time, not perfectly round. If I am not entirely correct, please correct me. Thanks.
Dick

A broadstrike has all of the design present on both faces, while an off-center strike has the design cut off on at least on face. Both feature expansion since neither is constrained by the collar.

So the 1966 is an off-center strike since IN GOD WE TRUST is cut off.

A happy fourth of July to all! Be careful of the burns! They can be very serious!

Hi Mike and Happy 4th.I have a few hundred broadstrikes and off center coins of all denominations most of which are bu examples.I guess the irregular shape of the unstruck portion on this coin thru me off. Nearly all the o/c coins I have ,it's the struck portion that is sometimes elongated or irregular as seen in the pic of the 83.The 99 looks like a normal cent in shape and diameter, just off center.

The shape, and the extent of expansion, of a centered broadstrike, an uncentered broadstrike, and an off-center strike will vary enormously depending on several factors:

1. Whether both faces are die-struck or or whether we're dealing with a uniface strike. A uniface strike shows greater expansion because the effective striking pressure is higher, due to the double thickness involved.
2. How far off-center the strike is. Controlling for all other factors, a way off-center strike will be more elongated because effective striking pressure is higher. All the striking pressure is concentrated in a smaller area.
3. The "ram pressure" of the press and the minimum die clearance. The higher the ram pressure and the smaller the minimum die clearance, the greater the expansion.
