eds/mds varieties

Hello all.
I see varieties such as the 1995D cent DDO (FS-041). Chuck has an excelent photo of it in mds here on this site. The fact that a mds coin exists indicates to me there must have been very many minted. Yet there are only about 40 certified by all grading companies. Were the rest just lost to circulation,sitting in 2X2's or are they found out during production and as many as possible are removed but some slip thru? I would think the value of this coin and the searching for it's cousin from Philly would cause the grading company pops. to rise much higher. Joe

That's a really good question, Joey - one I can't readily answer. The most plausible solution is that there are a lot of them still sitting in mint bags out there, but who knows??

One thing I can offer is that there are a vast number of different die varieties that face the same mystery - MDS, and even LDS examples known with fewer than 500 total examples known to exist doesn't match up with the 20,000-100,000 that had to have been minted to cause such wear on the die.

I think what is likely is that a lot of the 1995D DDOs ended up making it into circulation and are out there being spent every day, just waiting to be found. I know of two different people who live in Arkansas who have found no fewer than three each in their change, so the possibility is still there that many more are awaiting discovery. I live 65 miles north of Arkansas, have been through no fewer than five dozen rolls worth of 1995D cents and haven't found a single one - not even one of the two known minor dies. Just my luck, but I keep searching when I get a chance.

Joe......You and Chuck bring up some excellent points. I have actually seen a 1995D DDO that borders on middle to late die state. My personal opinion is that there are a lot that are sitting in people's personal collections, as well as some unsearched rolls and bags. The big hupla in 1995 was the 1995P DDO # 1 cent. Not a lot of people realized there were at least 3 different 1995P DDO's, 1 of the 1995P DDR, 5 different 1995D DDO's, and 1 of the 1995D DDR's. 10 Varieties for 1 year is a pretty good year!. It seems to me that not many people know about the Denver mint doubled dies, and therefore, there may be many out there in circulation. Based upon your observations of the MDS coins, there may be more out there as pocket change than we thought.

Thanks Bob. I didn't realize it till I traded for a FS-041 in pcgs ms65. I looked at the close up's from this site noting the location of markers above Lincolns coller and below liberty. Realizing that was a mds coin photographed and mine did not have those markers it took alot of strikes to produce those markers. Joe

I have been looking in Ebay for a 1995 D DDO for a few months off and on but nothing yet. But lots of the Philly version.

Garry: I saw one a while back. It sold for $500.00. Wished I had the money to splurge for it. Just don't see them often.

Wow, coop, $500 and that one has had virtually no publicity at all.

The person I traded with for mine also had one on e-bay in a pcgs ms66 holder with a buy it now price of $1700. The bids took it up to $700 and did not meet the reserve. He may still have it he wanted to resubmit it to get it into a 67 holder.
Right now there is one on e-bay in a anacs ms65 holder at $500. I think anacs grades as tight as pcgs at times and have even submitted anacs coins I cracked from a pf67 holder come back a pcgs 68. Here is the one on e-bay

It says die # 3 on it. I wonder if it is the same one, as it does not have an image of the doubling? Not sure which die number the one on the site is?

Die 3 is the fs-041(3-0-V) but you could e-mail him to be sure. I would feel strange e-mailing again as I pointed out to him he refered to the coin as a ms64 but pictured a ms65. I was nice in pointing this out as sometimes I pass on auctions that are not clear. He did not respond to my e-mail but answeared it by correcting the auction.

It is something. A couple weeks ago a pcgs ms66 1995D fs-041 was bid up to only $700 and that one at anacs ms65 sold for almost $900 with six serious bidders. And the pcgs coin had some fantastic photos in it.
