I'm no expert on errors, but this one is very intriguing. With the strongest (2nd) strike pretty much obliterating most devices from the first strike, and it happening on both sides, I think this one might be the real deal (double struck rotated in collar). Mike Diamond or another error expert should have a better explanation if in fact it is the real deal or a post mint bashing of some sort.

Man I wish it was in better shape. It feels a little light, like the zinc has started to oxidize, but I have not put it on a scale yet. Also the copper plating is damaged and likely holed in a couple of places. The side of the rim looks especially bad. There is some kind of crease there.

My next question is probably going to be whether or not it is worthwhile to get it certified or if it is just a curiousity that I should set aside?

Thanks, you guys are great,
Horgad the Copper Penny Hoarder

There's definitely some issues with the condition of the coin, but I wouldn't send it in just yet until we get other opinions on it. Like I said, I am not an error specialist, but the ones who would know do frequent this forum occasionally. I will see if I can't get Mr. Diamond to have a look at it.

It's a genuine in-collar double strike, with significant rotation between strikes. The craters on the reverse appear to be post-strike damage, judging from the condition of the "CA" of AMERICA. Still, it's a neat circulation find. In light of its beat-up condition, there's no point in getting it slabbed.

Neat coin!

Much neater than an off center double strike to me.

Nice find. It pays to even look at the ugly ones! Smile
