the parts to the north-east of the ear are flat

to the south of the ear is a light raised area conforming to the ear shape

whats up with the upside down check mark

I think what you see near the ear might be die deterioration, it often shows on the dates on 89-90 cents. If it's not die deterioration it's strike related not a DDO.

Just a guess.
