Just wanted to know what would cause the parallel lines running from the E in STATES to the R in AMERICA. I haven't seen any like it before.

The fact that the lines are parallel, and very symetrical indicates to me that they must be marks made by a lathe. The polishung grinder is not that precise. I could be wrong, so don't quote me.
