I believe it is on the die. It is NOT trails. More than likely some sort of polishing, or, it could be feeder arm damage.

last comet tail I'd seen was at Turkey Run Park outside of Bradenton, Fl.
and that was Haley's

Halley's comet was a disappointment for me. I had expected a big tail and ended up with a fuzzy ball - and I had a decent Meade 295MM telescope.
Best comet I've seen was Hyakutake back in 1996. BTW, the discoverer of that comet died in 2002 at the age of 51! That's a little young.
