I'm posting some large cents today and while looking through the few hundred I have ,I came across this one and after further evaluation I think it is the 44 over 81.Am I correct.I bought it as a regular 1844 for $10.

I have one as well and yours looks like it might be the variety you spoke of. I posted a pic of this variety before on the forum, but it is easier to just show it again.

Hi Bob,Yes it does look like the one you posted.Definitely has the hook off the 1st 4 and the little knotch coming off the top of the 2nd and the line inside the 2nd 4. .Not bad for $10.00.What would you estimate on grade,VG or maybe fine/Thank you,Ken

Bob: What is that little mark over the top of the 8? Another number?

Ken,
I would try some acetone to try and get rid of some of that red...but nothing else. Do not rub it either, but let it sit a bit and blot off anything that will readily come off. Cleaning it (even a coin with a surface like yours) will significantly reduce its value.

Coop, The mark you refer to may be a part of the repunching. The 1844/1881 variety was produced by initially punching the date upside down before realizing their mistake. The remnants of the upside down 18 is what we see under the 44.

If it isn't the 44/81, it is a good double! nice coin. I won't bother checking mine, as it is a 1850 coronet, and the only one I have! LOL

Ken,
I would say your coin grades between VG (very good) 8 and F (Fine) 15
