Mike,, it looks to me like it took a "hit", from maybe another coin. Hard to say. I doubt the possibility of another column.

Maybe a line that was on the planchet or in the planchets plating?

I honestly think that both pictures are die scratches with corrosion starting to take effect on the zinc. The lines in both pictures are running in the same direction. I have seein this happen before. I thru it back into the pile. I hope this help.
