I'm just getting started collecting pennies and found this one. I know the picture has a lot to be desired, but can someone tell me any information about this coin and how it be classified?

Looks like strike doubling plus the normal doubling that's on that forehead area. (reduction doubling)

Machine doubling. The metal is just shoved around because the dies were loose. Happens a lot. Worth what it says on the back of the coin....

That MD is pretty gnarly

Ed - The reduction doubling era generally ended before 1966. I'd vote nothing but machine doubling on this one. It was rather prevalent during that period.

Reduction lathe doubling actually happens when the design is being reduced and transferred to the master hub - thus all the dies created from the master dies created by that master hub would have the doubling to some extent, depending on the age of the hub at the time the die was created. It's basically VERY common on a number of different years, and has no added value.

Machine doubling is caused by loose dies on the minting press. The die bounces on the coin causing flattening to some of the design that to novice collectors appears to be doubling.

The cause and effect are completely different for these two things.

To all that replied: Thanks much!! I've been bitten by the coin collecting bug, big time. I also owe much thanks to a close neighbor, Bill Slaughter, for helping me out and telling me that the forum members are a great bunch of guys. I have allot to learn and examining coins is like treasure hunting to me. Can't give up my number one hobby; tactical shooting (.45 and 9mm caliber 1911's), but I don't shoot after the sun goes down. And when the sun goes down, the coins come out (along with some homemade wine). Looking forward to making that big find.

Welcome to the site! Bill gave you some "strait dope". what he says is true. I haven't been here that long, (in spite of my numbers), but it has been worth it! I was not a variety collector until B J Neff put me onto the site, but it sure got my attention!. BTW, Tell bill Dick said hi.
