sernfam11,
"You have one of the more historic and easily recognizable Civil War tokens. Dix would be John Adams Dix, the namesake of the army base Fort Dix in New Jersey. In January of 1861, Dix was appointed as Secretary of the Treasury by President James Buchanan(Lincoln was not inaugurated until March unlike today when it occurs in January). When Louisiana seceded, he sent a message to Treasury agents in New Orleans stating "If any one attempts to haul down the American flag, shoot him on the spot." At the time, New Orleans was the home of a branch mint. The message was intercepted by Confederates but it still had the desired effect- that phrase became one of the first Union rallying cries of the Civil War and when Lincoln assumed the Presidency, he appointed Dix to the position of Major General in the Union Army."
"Civil War tokens were created due to a shortage of small change for commerce. They were the same size and composition as the contemporary Indian Head cents. They were not US Mint products but they were used freely in the Union. For the most part they either had a patriotic slogan or advertised a business and the predominant date on them is 1863."

But you have the SPOOT variety. The diesinker made a big mistake and added an extra O to Spot. Very scarce! And you have a nice specimen. The finest known SPOOT is MS64 RB. Also was Bret Palser's and sold for $1,000. I have a photo of that one too.
Here is mine....

here is what the coin looks like without the error. This is mine also. I purchased both coins from Bret Palser when he was selling coins with Rick Snow on www.indiancent.com. Brett died a couple years ago. He was a prolific civil war token collector and researcher.

Nice catch Garry. I am not a medal/token guy so I didn't even pick up on that.

Thank you. I almost sold this to someone for $10.00. What grade do you think this is because of the hit on the edge?~TINA

it has near mint state details and the hit on the edge is significant but to me it does not detract from the coin that much. The only other problem with the coin is that the SPOOT side seems to have some of the green PVC residue. I would go for $100.
