Here is one more overdate from Peru. Below is a date detail from two lighting angles showing how different details can be seen. One photo never quite shows everything.
The underlying 8 and 9 are pretty obvious, but I'm unsure on the last digit. Judging by the depth of the 0, the die was heavily polished, perhaps to remove the old digit. But, if one closely compares the first 0, notice how the inner loop pinches around the contour of the 9? Since I see a similar trace on the last digit, it could be a 1900/1899.

Kurt, looking at the two, with 4X magnifier, I get the impression that it could be 1900/1890. The "9" sure has had some "close attention! It looks much wider that one would expect. Or is it my eyes?

Dick,
Given everything on the top of the 9, I wondered if there was some extra tooling to better cover up the 8? Good observation!
So I put the coin under two scopes, and despite that "waist" on the 0, I don't see any real evidence of an underlying digit. Whether it was a 0 or something else...it's completely gone. Let's just say 1900/1890.

Kurt, that would be my guess. I used a 4X view, while looking at your pictures, and the last digit, does not seem to be more than a slight movement during the punching, if any at all.
The pictures you post of the coin(s), make it easy for me to make determinations. Mine, don't have the focus, which makes it extremely difficult, at times.

And here's another lighting angle on the "19" which clearly shows the repunching on the 1. Interesting how different lighting captures different details.

I agree! That is one of the most important factors of photography, and one item I am working on at present, with SuperDaves guidance. One day I want to p[ost one like you do.. I have set myself a very hard to reach goal, but, I'm stubborn, and when I set my mind, (feeble, or otherwise), it happens, sooner, or later.
