Not sure where I should have posted this, and know that this site deals with copper coins, but just had to share this 2000P Jefferson Clashed Die I found roll searching a few months ago. It has been graded as a Strong Clashed Die O/R with a grade of AU-58

Here are the photos of the Obverse of the coin

Wow Dave! That is very, very cool. You will seldom see clashes as strong as that. Congrats on a great find.

That's a very nice coin. I don't believe I have ever seen such an obvious clash on a US coin.

Wow!! Shocked Obviously those dies were retired soon after that strike? Confused That is the mother of all trainwrecks for die clashes. There is even relief details--now incuse. Amazing.

Would hardened dies normally clash that strongly, given their tolerances are set to strike a planchet, and not each other? Was this a die adjustment strike, minus the planchet?

Kurt, given the strength of the clash, it had to be a mistake, somewhere! The normal adjustment would have to be pretty close to the thickness of the planchet, (after the strike was made), to give the proper relief of the struck coin. I din't know what the minimum distance would be, on a given coin, but that nickle sure had the absolute minimum, apparently!
Clashes seldom, if ever warrant a premium, but in this case, I'd say, yes, it definitely is worthy.
