This is a pretty severe case of die deterioration doubling. Seems to be pretty prevalent on nickels.

I agree. I noticed it was on both sides of the letters, and that is a very good indicator of DDD.

Die deterioration doubling fools a number of beginning collectors on nickels because it can be so convincing.
