Here is a dollar that showed up yesterday. It only weighs 19 grams, as opposed to 26.73 grams, if genuine, and of silver.
This, along with a "Sitting Liberty dollar were given to my D-I-L, in payment for some food where she works.
Looks like we are getting desperate! Mr. President, are you SURE you know what you are doing???
It is a SANDCAST coin, weighs 19 grams, made of CuNi, obviously magnetic, and FAKE!

Pretty tough blaming this sort of thing on the current President Dick. This sort of stuff has been going on forever, and making sand-cast coins to pass off as original is not necessarily a result of the recession. Still, this is a good way to show what can be done by industrious individuals.

Dick: Could you take a closer image of a device that you can see the lack of detail showing that it is a sand cast? I would like an image to show what to look for on fake sand cast coins. The loss of detail is so obvious. Most people wouldn't think of someone casting such a fraud.

Coop, I sent you an email photo. I couldnt locate it to attach to email, so it went huge. I have a lot of trouble trying to get photos from the Canon Utilities. There are times when the camera is listed, and I can open and get any, or all. Other times, I can't even find the camera!

Bob, I blame as much of the current situation on him as he has caused. The so-called "Bail-out" is, in my opinion, the worsdt thing that could happen. If they want to save the home-owners, then instead of forclosure, re-write the mortgages. Yes, there will always be a few losers, but the vast majority, will respond favorably. The same with the rest of the "lending operation. You have "losers", that will never become usefull to themselves, or others, but again, there are so many more who deserve a second chance. They are the "losers" in the current scenario. They are the ones who deserve a revised contract. There are others who deserve to lose. I remember when I lost my job, and eventually my home. I had to pay a lot more to re-locate, that it would have been, had they re-written the mortgage, I could have stayed there, and continue buyng the house. Obama has the right idea, but is going about it the weong way, IMHO.

Dick,
Those fakes look horrible!
The rim and details are very weak.
What does the reeded edge look like?

Nice pics. It looks very weak.
How about the reeding?
If it was cast you might see the fill area on the rim and they might have re-cut the reeding to hide the fill hole so the reeding may be ugly and have a recut area.

Dick,
I certainly can't debate you on the state of the economy. However, this economy was in a major slide long before he took control. My point was that you blamed this particular counterfeit coin on the President and/or his current policy. The man's been in office for less than 3 months. Whether you agree on the bailout's or not, or anything else he has done, you can not blame someone sand casting a coin on that. Then again, I don't know either, but in my humble opinion, whether you like the man or not, you can not expect the economy to fix itself over night. Give the man a break. Things are better now than they were 30 days ago!

Bob, I apologize for blaming Obama. Like you say, he didn't do it all. It has been bad long before he came into the picture. I just think he is going about it the wrong way. It has improved some, and the Stock Market shows it. I'll comment again at the end of his term. Okay?
Ed, I'll take some shots at the edges, and the rim, also the reeding. It does look pretty symetrical. Maybe it was re=-cut. I'm nit familiar with the sandcast, other than that it is very porous-looking. BTW, thanks for the comments on the pictures. They are with the new Canon Powershot A590 IS.

Ed, it took a while to locate them but here is the flat edge, and the reeded edge:
I get the destinct impression that the "reeds" were added later.

Dick,
The reeding looks strange too, not like the real ones.

Dick,
Good shots to see the surface details--that one definitely is note "OEM". The reeding is a big giveaway too. I recently was shown a pressure-cast 1899 Canada 50c where the details were enough to pass at a casual glance, but the reeding was notably incomplete--the depth stopped halfway, and they added dirt to hide the problem.
"Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses"...certainly did not apply to boatloads of fake coins that are now washing ashore Fortunately, in cases like this...they're easy to spot. I'm curious as to accuracy on the new die-struck fakes. I hear the fake Bust Halves are getting better, but still not fooling the experts--yet. But stick that same coin in a fake PCGS slab, and you'll make a quick buck on eBay.

Kurt the idea is fine, but unlike many who do sell on ebay, I couldn't do it. my conscience would drive me nuts, (well, More so than normal)! I will get to the other pictures, a bit later. I am adding siding to the front of my house. I have alradty painted some of the past rwepairs. Meanwhile.....
