Not sure what to make of this.! I first thought it was possibly gas bubbles so I tried depressing with a tooth pick but it had no effect.. Any ideas?

That looks rather strange. The only thing I would think would be some type of gouging.

From the position, and general shape, I agree. It must be damage to the surface of the die.

Could the die damage have been caused from a previous strike thru of some type?

I had also thought it was a hit or that something had been rolled across the face.. But there is no signs of that type damage that I can see & the ridges cross at the bottom so.??

Whatever it was, it must have hurt.! Ol abes cryin... Smile

Abe was crying Laughing

Another possibility is a stain or oil on the planchet gets plated over, the plating has a streak or bubble over the area then as the zinc oxidized (in the bubble) the oxide fills the gap and the area bulges and spreads. It looks like that coin was growing stuff, any tiny hole might get it growing under the plating.

Some type of liquid (Lol perhaps tears Smile ) + expansion would seem to explain the error.! Anyhow its real oddity & a keeper in my book..
