Hi Dave - I think you are seeing indents in the stairs just below the columns. If so, this is from a working hub that has been affected with "wavy steps". We have seen this on Lincoln cents from 2006, 2007 and 2008. While quite common, it does make you stop and think as to what is going on.

This variety was first described by Robert Tingle as "anti wavy step" because they were incused and not raised.
