Due to a discussion over in LCR that spilled over into the CONECA forum, the doubled die Lincoln cent 1956-D, DDO-001 has been de-listed by Dr. James Wiles.
The larger story behind this de-listing is that Dr. Wiles now believes that the numbers were engraved into the master die and not punched in as previously thought.
I will more than likely do a follow up article in ERRORSCOPE concerning why it is now thought that the numbers were engraved V. punched into the master die.

Was engraving commonly done during this time or an oddity? Do you think this might also effect other variety listings?
Just curious,

I'm not sure if that one was ever listed on coppercoins, was it?
Is it that one with a tilted 5 over 5? That one looks like something was broken/damaged more than a being a doubled die.

Ed, I checked, after reading your post, and it is not listed in that ID. There is a -001, but not the same variety. It is an eyelid variety, all 12 of them. All others, (36 listed, 24 are MM).
