Ok, I just wanted to get this clear in my mind. I realize that new varieties are being found practically every day recently with the 2nd series formative 2009 Lincoln. So am I correct in saying that there are varieties found in the 1st issue birthplace P (Philadelphia) mint and the 2nd issue Formative years P (Philadelphia), but nothing has been discovered in the Denver mint 1st issue or 2nd issue. It's been all Philadelphia, right?
And, if there has not been any birthplace denver varieties discovered, do you think the chances diminish over time?

rock, I'm no expert, but my two-cents say yes, the chances are good, if, and when the circulation becomes more generalized. The chances are better that way. As it is, the very liited amount in circulation, indicates to me that it will be a while before any begin showing. Most of thoe "hoarding these cents, are NOT variety collectors, and so they will rmain hidden for quite some time. IMHO

My theory is this.....
The P mint looks at dies for use in the P mint as internal so they plan to catch problems when the coins are struck so they may not inspect the dies as well. The dies they send to the D mint probably get looked a before being shipped to P so they inspect them better then the D mint might again inspect them before use.... So the dies in Denver might have more chances of being given better QC.

Just a theory.

makes sense.

again, it couild just be that the denver mint has a better facility, equipment, employees....unfortunately.

but I like your theory.

I just wish for us in the denver mint distribution area of the midwest, that they would goof up once in a while.

Just one thing wrong with your theory. Since 1996 the Denver Mint has had its own die shop, so the only die that Philadelphia Mint ships to Denver is the master die.

As for machinery, Philadelphia may have the edge on newer stuff since the Mint was modernizing that facility in 1999.

Why more faults come out of the Philadelphia mint (post 1996) maybe because more Philadelphia coins are searched by more people than they are west of the Mississippi. Just a guess though.

Well if that's the case then having an abundance of denver mint mark coins may be an advantage when searching for new varieties. I hadn't thought about the demographics of variety collectors or roll searchers. Plus, finding varieties on the philadelphia minted coins could just perpatuate itself in that people know there have been varieties found and will choose to look more in that same direction.

interesting theories.

That's interesting.

It makes me wonder if something is done different at the D mint. So many modern single squeeze P coins have doubling but D seems totaly different.

Just food for thought Wink

Ed, they probably don't have the same QC as the "D" mint has.
Just kidding! There is no explanation that would account for the difference, UMHO. Not getting any don't help find the solution, either! BTW, I did get a new "log Cabin", but it cost me about $150.00! Of course there were also a type set of cents included. A 1832 large cent, a FE, an IHC, a '9 VDB, and the "09 Zincoln cent. A bunch of "{[(UNSEARCHED)]}" wheats, "untouched by huuman hands, (since the last ones)"! I wanted the FE, and IHC, and the Zincoln. Heluva price to pay, but as it turned out, it may be well worth the price! Check your email for an explanation. Mine is not as pretty, but I believe it is the same clash.
