I have been told that this die crack under the jacket at 5 o'clock is an attribute of an original 14D, but has anyone ever done an overlay to be sure it isn't a wild D and D RPM?

I don't think it is an "errent" MM.

On some the crack heads up towards the tie like a lightning bolt. It also looks like a small gouge east of the crack. In the later stage the back of Abes jacket has what look like flames heading into the field and the mintmark is doubled from erosion.

Dicks photo shows the D like the PCGS grading book photo. It's center is a triangle pointing east and the top corner is slightly bulb shaped.

Anyone know how many dies existed???

Ed, this is not the '14-D, but it has a crack to end all cracks!

comes off the bottom of the vest to rim.

main crack, in center.

this end goes to rim at a 45 degree angle.
Hard to see, and harder to photograph, but enjoy!
Dick

I thought there was only one die pair, but the locations on the mint marks are different.

It would be nice if someone could list them by die pairs and document them better. I've never seen anything that told the details other than they all have the same D and some have cracks.

Coop, I can't 'grid your date, but the other tqwo look to be very close. One MM might be a shade farther down, but i can't tell for ssure.

That was also my conclusion but it's so close I can't be sure.

In the PCGS book it shows 2 but it doesn't say they're the only 2 dies.
The top photo on page 242 seems to match Dicks coin.
The next photo has the big crack and maybe slightly higher MM.

Looks like everyone with a 1914-D need to take an image of the date and mint mark like Dick's and see what we come up for different mint mark locations?

I wasnt aware that a die crack is diagnostic for a '14-D. Coop's photo does not show one. A die crack would occur at the end of a run, not thru the whole run. So I think one with a die crack would be scarcer than one without.

Here is my date and mint mark image. Hoping to see more. Maybe we can get a better idea how many OBV dies were used this year?

Dick's coin overlayed exactly like mine. John's was further Northwest like I thought it would be.

I guess my 'grid" works. Coop just proved it. Now, if we each had a roll of '14-D's, we could do apretty good job of finding out how many dies were used, related to the mintage report.
