hello there-

i have a quick question about a wheatie penny. my sister has a 1936 cent coin that is, for lack of a better description, super skinny. it only feels about half as thick as a regular penny, and it's also lacking the raised rim. is this a known error? what might cause such a thing?

incidently, if you're into wheaties and have a few moments to spare, i came across this forum while trying to gather some research on wheaties. i'm hoping to organize a present for my sister for christmas, details can be found here: http://www.coppercoins.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=34747

thanks!

Welcome aboard!

It sounds like you also got interested in cents by putting together the project for you sister. It can be a lot of fun to get into the hobby and learn as you go.

Well there's 4 main things that we find that are thin cents.

Most likely it's one of these:

If it only has one side it could be part of one of these majic or stash coins:

Much less likely it could be an error made on a wrong planchet (blank for a different coin) because in some years the US mint made foreign coins with smaller planchets. This is unlikely but they exist.

Sometimes a dime planchet or already struck dime gets made into a cent but then it would be the color of a dime.

Smile

i've definitely been spending more time than expected linking around the internet reading random things about random coins. so very interesting, and very distracting.

i just went and took another look at her skinny penny, and it isn't one sided, nor does it look dime-sized in the diameter sense. i couldn't tell if the surface looked like your picture, it's definitely a well worn coin. it looks, to the untrained eye at least, exactly like a penny should, just thinner. i should look into the acid thing more, though. thanks for the info, and the welcome Smile
